Welcome! I too am a relative newbie. I am now a level 20 elementalist, but still very much learning the game. I think you'll enjoy Guild Wars. I am loving it so far ( except for the Crystal desert missions where I am dead more than alive...one day I'll complete those!)

Have fun. Ahh the pleasure of not knowing everything, and discovering everything about the game.

Tip: When pvp -> Skill slot 8 == Ress Sig!

welcome to gw

keep in mind that tip doesn't always apply to all situations in pvp; you don't always need a resurrection signet on your bar.

Welcome to the game.

Oh how I miss the noob days. Always having something to do...entering a new explorable for the first time. The first time doing a mission. Watching a new cutscene.

Yeah. Learn which profession you like via PvE, learn the skills, learn the skillbars then move onto PvP.

Now you do not have to move to PvP, many of us stay with PvE.

There is a great deal to do in PvE, not to mention you don't just have to "test" each proffesion but can actually create several chars and keep using all of them.

I have 9 different lvl 20 chars and when a guild member needs a hand with something I have 9 different options depending on what kind of help he/she needs.

While some proffesions may be more fun than others to each of us, there are certain proffs that just work better than others for certain missions/quests/dungeons/ect...

Usually not when monking.

& for those of you who for some reason consider Alliance Battles PvP (other than the fact you are playing against other players...)
Not there either.

Welcome to guild wars! We hope that you enjoy your stay! Best tips I can offer are:

1. Join a guild.
The best guilds are the ones that make you feel the most comfortable. Don't spring for one that makes you an officer right away (hard to believe, I know). Try and find one with a bunch of high level players who would be happy to help you learn the game.

2. HAVE FUN!
This is the most important rule of all. So many people get so far into this game that they will do things even if it bores them to tears, (and then they come and QQ in riverside ) If it feels like you dont want to do someting, then DONT do it! Never feel like you have to do something.

3. Read Guru (but not too much).
Try browsing guru a bit to see what you can learn. Try "the campfire" section to see what you can learn about PVE and skill bars and such. However, be careful. However, be warned. A lot of people who have largely quit GW still hang around these forums and point any flaw they can find, and "flame" excessively.

Good Luck!

Welcome to GW.
First of all http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page is a good site for a lot of questions concerning the game.

As far as your last question about acquiring runes and skills goes there are two ways to do this.
The first is thru the role playing aspect(called PvE) where you unlock skills via the story line. Runes and weapon mods are unlocked by "finding" them on items as you identify them. You can only use skills you have bought/unlocked for your PvE character.
The second option opens skills and mods/runes for your account's heroes and PvP characters. By playing any of the PvP modes of the game you gain faction. Faction can be used to buy skills, mods, and runes. These can be used fully by any PvP character or hero you acquire. A subset of this is the pvp unlock packs you can buy from Anet that speed up that process for you.
Keep in mind though, even if you have everything unlocked with faction, your PvE characters are still limited to what skills they have learned themselves.
Hope that doesn't confuse you and still answers your question a little bit.

Welcome new players ^_^

I remember first buying this game, i was so daunted and running around like a headless chicken xDDD

If you need help feel free to ask :-)

One important thing you need to learn from the start is how your aggro bubble works, ive come across many players who say they have been playing for 2 years and they still dont know how to keep out of aggro range lol xDDD

Welcome to Guild Wars I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. We are always looking for fresh meat in PvP (nothing personal).

My advice: read Guru, search guild listings for one that might suit your style. As a new player learned a lot from listening to GuildCast. See you in game.

Welcome everyone's advice here is really good, thought I'd mention one more thing;

I and a lot of my friends had to go through a kind of roleplaying adjustment process when we started GWs simply cos we're all so used to RPGs being about doing endlessly repetitive tasks in order to level up or work through a skill tree. When you're given a GWs character that has attributes and skills you can change every time you enter town, and you don't have to grind the whole time to make your character or skills better... it can feel strange.

Don't worry! Give it some time, it's better. What you develop while playing is your own skills and creativity with the game, not just some arbitrary numbers on your avatar's character sheet, and that ends up being way more fun than RPGs you've played before.

(yah what can i say i love the game and i'm biased)
